From Monroe County Advisory: With the storm track of Category 5 Hurricane Irma still headed for the Florida Keys, Monroe County will be issuing a mandatory visitor evacuation expected to begin at sunrise on Wednesday (9/6/17). The Key Largo Fire Rescue & Emergency Medical Services (KLFR&EMS) District is sad to announce that Tom Tharp, past KLFR&EMS District Commissioner, passed away on July 20th. Tom was instrumental in the creation of the Key Largo Fire District, and an advocate of the Fire Department. His life-long contributions to the Fire Industry and Emergency Services are recognized, appreciated and will be missed!  A Celebration of Life is still evolving; however, it is expected the Memorial Service will be scheduled in November this year.

RFP #15-001 which provides for the installation of the Phase 2 (FY 2014-2015) and Phase 3 (FY2015-2016) fire hydrants was completed. Each phase of this project consists of 8 fire hydrants.

The Key Largo Volunteer Fire Department conducted Fire Prevention Training for approximately 950 children, and they also conducted a Live Burn Demonstration at KMART for the community.

To date seven (7) of the nine (9) of the Phase 1 “Project to Hydrant Key Largo” were installed. The fire hydrants at Wheaton's and Rowell's Marina will be installed in 2015. The budget was $100,000.

The District worked with the County to develop a three-year Inter-local Agreement with the District to receive Discretionary Sales Tax Funds as follows: FY 2014 - $350,000; FY 2015 - $250,000 and FY 2016 - $250,000. To be used for vehicles and for the installation of fire hydrants.

The District approved a contract with LaRocco for the purchase and installation of eight (8) new fire hydrants within the District. This project is expected to be completed prior to the end of October 2014.

The District sold the old tanker for $37,920.62. The proceeds of the sale will be placed in the Vehicle Replacement Fund.

Residents of the District may take advantage of the Fire Department Smoke Detector Program funded by a grant. The grant period ends on March 31,2014, one one requirement is the Fire Department must install the new smoke detector. The community may request a smoke detector by calling 451-2700.
